The new program helps people in the North Bay area of San Francisco, CA, whose older family members may have impaired driving skills because of age.
This program is especially important today because of the increase in the number of individuals aged 70 or older with licenses. In 1997, 73% of that age group had licenses, but in 2019, that percentage had increased to 83%.
In addition, CDC statistics show that 45+ million drivers were aged 65+ in 2018, an increase of 60% from 2000, and this number is expected to increase to 98+ million by 2060.
The Beyond Driving with Dignity program was created in 2008 by Matt Gurwell, a retired Ohio State Trooper whose passion was to reduce preventable traffic accidents involving older drivers with age-related diminished driving ability.
The program’s mission is to reduce the mortality rate of older drivers through educational programs for both the drivers and their families.
Gurwell understood that many seniors found it difficult to give up driving because that meant a loss of independence. He also recognized that senior drivers were often unable or unwilling to assess their driving skills on their own.
This program serves as a way for older drivers and their families to decide whether the older individual can continue driving or needs to stop. When the decision is made for the older driver to retire from driving, this program can help the transition be smooth and successful.
